If you’re wondering what’s Brahmi, it’s a herb that’s colloquially known as Brahmi. It translates to Herb of Grace, and its Botanical name is Bacopa Monnieri. This herb is widely used in Ayurveda for a lot of purposes, but it has a place in almost all recipes for hair care!

Brahmi was typically known for its ability to improve hair growth. Yes, it is the same herb that’s touted for it’s memory-improving properties, but we’re not going into that now! Do you know you can also apply Brahmi to wet hair as a conditioner? It makes hair stronger, healthy, shiny and most importantly, reduces hair fall. So, if you’re looking to use Brahmi without making oil out of it, you could try other creative ways to use it post or pre shower.

Now, we’re going to make an easy and simple oil with Brahmi. Let’s get started, shall we?

Ingredients

Brahmi Leaves – 1 Handful

Coconut Oil – 100 Ml

Castor Oil – 1 Tsp.

Black Seeds – ½ Tsp.

Argan Oil – 1 Tbsp.

Instructions

Heat up the Coconut Oil in a heavy bottomed pan.

When the oil is hot add the brahmi leaves and castor oil.

When the oil stops spluttering (when the moisture from the leaves are completely removed) and the oil changes color, remove from heat.

After the oil cools down a bit, add Argan oil and the black seeds to the oil. (You can also crush it slightly and add to the oil).

Let it cool down completely.

Once it cools down fully, strain and transfer to a glass bottle.

Use as needed.

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

If you don’t get fresh Brahmi leaves, use the dried leaves or powder. If you are using powder, the results are better if you make a paste of the powder and add to the oil.

Castor Oil is optional – if you have cold or sinus related issues, you can skip it. Or you can use it a pre-shower treatment and wash off.

Black Seed Oil – is optional, but it is known to promote hair regrowth. It’s an excellent hair tonic and a great addition to the recipe.

You can use Sesame Oil, Sunflower Oil, Olive Oil or any other oil / oil blends of your choice. If you are using Olive Oil, instead of heating it up use infusion method to get the nutrition into the oil – try the sunlight infusion method.

You can also dry the leaves, or use dried leaves and prepare infused oil instead of heating it up.


They say Brahmi Oil can be used on both dry and wet hair. I haven’t tried oiling wet hair, so not sure about the results. But there’s a prevailing belief that applying oil on wet hair can accelerate premature ageing of hair or graying.

Apply the oil to air dried hair and style as usual. Remember: Massage the oil into your scalp and run it in with your fingertips. Also, cover your strands with the oil lightly.

However, for those who don’t like oiling their hair after shower use this as a pre-shower treatment. Apply it to your hair and scalp generously and wait for 15 – 25 minutes before washing off.
