Hair Wash Tips – Part IV

We’ve washed our hair for as long as we can remember. But are we doing it right? Hair wash is part of our hair care routine but doing it right makes all the difference. As promised, here’s more on hair wash tips for you!

How Much Pressure?

Did you think using brute force is the only way to get your scalp free of dirt and grime? You couldn’t be more wrong! You can use pressure, but gentle and firm pressure is all you need to get your scalp clean. You should NOT use your nails to “scrub” your hair – remember scalp is an extension of your skin and using your nails on your scalp can leave you with cuts. It can also damage your hair follicles. On the other hand, you can shampoo your hair and gently massage your scalp for a minute to get rid of build-up, dirt and grime. In fact, if you’re scalp really needs, two rounds of shampoo is OK but NO harsh scrubbing with nails. Here’s the good thing about spending a minute for massaging your scalp clean – it promotes better circulation and boosts hair growth.

How to Dry your Hair?

I like air-drying my hair and hardly use dryer unless I really need my hair dry like yesterday. If you like using your towel to dry your hair – just pat your hair. Wringing or rubbing too much can strip your hair off oils and leave it dry and tangled. If you rub with your towel till your hair is almost dry then you’re doing it all wrong. It will leave your hair dry and vulnerable. If you’re going to use heat tools like a dryer to dry your hair make sure to use a heat protectant.

Shampoo for Your Type

We’ve already explained how scalp is just an extension of your skin and as such, you should identify what’s your scalp and hair type to get the right hair care products. You might think you wash off your shampoo, so it doesn’t matter. Wrong! Choosing the right formula for your hair and scalp ensure your scalp and hair remains healthy and happy. For example: You pick a shampoo meant for oily hair or scalp when you hair or scalp is dry. What do you think will happen? It will leave your hair and scalp further dry and vulnerable to damage. If you continue using it the chances of damage are higher. So, choose a shampoo that suits your hair and scalp type for best results.

Conditioning Time

We all know applying hair conditioner is an important part of hair care routine. If you’re using rinse off conditioner, which most of us do, how long do you keep it on your hair? According to experts, the ideal time is between 5 – 7 minute. Yes, you should identify what works for you best trying out different durations between 5 and 7 minutes. The duration is very important and second only to applying technique. Apply the conditioner from the middle of your shaft and work your way to the ends – don’t I repeat don’t go near the roots! On the other hand, if you’re prone to tangles, apply your hair conditioner and comb out your tangles with a wide-toothed comb say experts. If you leave any longer than seven minutes it is going to make your hair oily or limp, but lesser than five minutes can leave your hair lacklustre.
