DIY Xanthum Hair Setting Lotion

Want to keep hair in place and avoid bad hair days, or from flyaway hairs spoiling your style? You can do that easily with a setting lotion for your hair!

Want to know how to prepare it? Basically, I wanted a simple and easy hair setting lotion that wouldn’t make my hair greasy or oily. I also did not want something heavy and rich.

With my hair being on the thinner side, I did not want something dense and greasy. So I came up with another idea to modify hair gel recipes to make this possible.

Ingredients

Almond Gum – a few pieces
Alcohol – 1 Tbsp.
Glycerin – 1 Tsp.
Xanthum Gum Powder – a pinch

Instructions

Soak the Almond Gum in water – you need a piece or two for getting a good quantity of gum. It really expands when soaked for 6 – 8 hours.

Once the pieces are soaked fully and expanded – takes 4 – 8 hours, the gel would be fully transparent and clear. It means the gum has expanded fully. If you see the gum pieces still sort of opaque you can add more water and wait for a bit.

When the gel is ready, add it to your blender jar along with alcohol, glycerin and Xanthum gum powder.

Whip on high for a few seconds and transfer to a sterilized jar.

Wait for an hour or so to set.

Done!

How to Use it?

Take a small dollop of this lotion and apply on your hair. Style as usual. You can also use it to keep flyaways in place by dabbing your fingers with this lotion and smoothing it over on your strands.

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

You can use hydrosols in this recipe for added aroma and benefits – Rose Water, Lavender Hydrosol, Orange Blossom Water, etc.

Alcohol – can leave your hair dry. So, if you are wary skip it. Glycerin alone should do, though you can use Witch Hazel for regulating oil levels.

You can also use other gums instead of Almond Gum – I use it as it is available here readily.

You can also use EOs for added aroma or benefits – Rosemary, Lavender, Citrus EOs, Geranium, etc.

You can break the Almond Gum before adding to water to make the process faster – instead of soaking it for hours; it gets ready in less than an hour.

Why These Ingredients?

Like I said, I wanted something light and non-greasy. The texture is more like a lotion than a cream, is really light and doesn’t make hair go limp or weigh it down.

I like that Glycerin keeps dryness in check and with this lotion, none of my strands are out of place.

This combination is on the right side of light and doesn’t leave hair weighed down, or stiff like gel or wax does.
