DIY Curling Crème

Want defined curls? Have you opted for curly hair products that don’t work? Tired of paying a fortune for commercial curling crème? Here’s a quick recipe you can try for stunning locks!

Ingredients

Argan Oil – 2 Tsps.
Marshmallow Root – 7 Tsps.
Slippery Elm – 3 Tsps.
Aloe Vera Gel – 2 Tsps.
Shea Butter – 2 Tsps.
Honey – 2 Tsps.
Coconut Oil – 2 Tsps.
Essential Oil – a few drops

Instructions

In a bowl, add 2 cups of water and marshmallow root and slippery elm and bring it to a boil. It should take 10 – 15 minutes for the consistency to become slimy and thick. Strain this mixture to a bowl and set aside.

Melt Shea butter and add honey, coconut oil, Argan oil, Aloe vera gel and any essential oil you would like to add and use an electric blender to whip the ingredients.

By this time, the gel would have cooled down sufficiently. Add the gel you have prepared to this and whip further. The ingredients should combine well and the result will be a rich and fluffy hair crème.

Transfer to a sterilized container and refrigerate. Use as needed.

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

You can use flaxseeds instead of marshmallow root and slippery elm. If you plan to use flaxseeds, check our recipe to know how to prepare it. You can keep the flaxseed gel as your base, or just use that and skip over to the steps after the gel preparation.

You can choose any essential oil you like. I prefer mint for the cooling effect and refreshing feel. I however, use other oils like lavender, rosemary, chamomile, orange, etc. based on my moods or preference.

You can use any oil instead of coconut oil. Olive oil is a great option and Avocado oil is ideal if you have dry and curly hair that is difficult to manage.

Also, you can skip honey or heat it if you don’t want it lighten your hair.

You can add Vitamin E Oil as a preservative. Alternatively, you can add citric acid or a few drops of any Citrus essential oil (lemon, lime, orange, tangerine, etc) as a preservative.

You can vary the ingredients or the measurements based on your requirements.

How to Use it?

Divide your hair into sections and apply it to your hair, working from the roots to the tips. Make sure you apply liberally and let your hair air-dry.

What is a Curling Crème?

When oil or butter is added to hair gel to make it creamy and nourishing it is hair Crème. It works much like a hair gel, only better and creamier. It moisturizes and nourishes your hair, while also making it more manageable. It is suitable when you want to opt for defined curls, braiding, twist-outs, etc.

Shelf Life

This lasts for 15 days at least, though I haven’t tried to keep it longer.

Why Use a Curling Crème?

Curling crème offers more nourishment, moisture and also functions as an emollient. It makes the curls more tamed and helps with styling easier. Also, adding slippery elm makes detangling easier. With curly hair, detangling can be tough and adding slippery elm and marshmallow root makes the job easier.
