DIY Argan Oil Shampoo

I wanted to try a Shampoo that has stable shelf life and can do without refrigeration or the like, so I can take it along for long trips. After talking to my friend who is into making soaps and shampoos commercially, I was finally able to make it!

The recipe itself is pretty easy and the ingredients aren’t natural, but this has a longer shelf life. It comes in handy when I don’t have time to prepare smaller batches at regular intervals or during travel.

Let’s take a look at the ingredients first. Shall we?

Ingredients

Distilled Water – 2 Oz
Potassium Cocoate – 20 Ml
Horsetail Extract – a few drops
Aloe Vera Extract – a few drops
Rosemary Antioxidant Extract – a few drops
Argan Oil – 1 Tsp.
Rosewood Essential Oil – 16 Drops

Instructions

Heat the water in a sterilized container and set aside – about 37 degrees Celsius.

In another bowl, add Potassium Cocoate and Argan Oil. Heat the mixture to about 37 degrees Celsius.

Add water to the oils and blend for a few seconds.

When the mixture cools down, add in the extracts and essential oil.

Stir to combine and transfer to sterilized pump containers.

Leave it for a day before using it.

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

I have not added thickener for this recipe. But you can add Liquid Crothix to thicken the shampoo if you want a thicker version – if you are adding it add it with the Potassium Cocoate mixture.

You can also use Salt as a thickener, if you don’t to use Crothix – which is not natural. If you have dry hair, consider using Xanthum Gum instead of Salt.

I have only used Rosemary Extract here for increased shelf life. You can use Optiphen ND for better shelf life. Since it is not natural, I did not add it in this recipe.

You can choose other extracts depending on your hair type, availability and requirement.

If you are allergic to Coconut, skip Potassium Cocoate and substitute it with other alternatives.

You can also add Honey to this recipe, to help dryness. If you are adding it, add it to water and then to the recipe.

For those with dry hair or scalp, add more of Argan Oil and or Avocado Oil – you can increase the oils slightly in this recipe in that case.

Choose the essential oils according to your preference or requirement – Palmarosa, Chamomile and Rosewood work best for dry hair and scalp, Tea Tree Oil works best for soothing or when there are scalp problems, Thyme or Birch for fragile hair, Cedarwood, Sage for oily hair and scalp, etc.

Like every other recipe, work with the ingredients and choose them or swap them according to your requirements – this way, the end result will be more suitable for you.
