Ayurvedic Hair Tips by Season

Do you know different seasons call for different hair care? We know skin care regimen varies with season, but it isn’t any different for hair.

We take it a step further and look into the books of Ayurveda and what experts have to say about hair care and how it changes through the season.

Winter Hair Care

Winter weather is cold to extremely cold and less humid. That means we don’t seat as much and hair doesn’t get dirty or oily soon. Even shampooing isn’t needed very frequently depending on one’s lifestyle. It’s a good idea to cut back on the number of showers and shampooing can be far and few between, especially for home makers, work at home professionals and those who aren’t exposed to environmental pollution a lot – less travel.

This way, scalp’s natural oils can be retained. You can massage your scalp with oil one day a week to ensure there’s no dryness and nourishment is replenished at regular intervals. If you use conditioner, you can use that as usual after shower. This helps lock in moisture and prevents dryness –cold weather can leave your hair dry and parched.

Conditioner also seals your cuticles. Is your hair wet? Wait till it is dry before you head out. Heading out with wet hair can cause split-ends. Use a cap to cover your hair to reduce loss of moisture. Make sure the scarf or cap you wear isn’t very tight.

Reduce the usage of styling tools and dryer to minimize hair damage. Don’t use of hot water for your hair. Tepid or warm water (at most) is best. You can also use herb-infused oils that are specially prepared for winter season for your hair and scalp.

Love the Christmas spices? Now is the time to give them a go with your hair oil. It also prevents flu that’s common during winters.

Summer Hair Care

Did you think summer is easier? What about the heat and perspiration? That means, hair and scalp become dirtier, greasy and messy faster. While scalp is just like skin and perspires to cool down the body, unlike skin, scalp perspiration is tricky. One it doesn’t evaporate easily and it promotes build-up. Pollution will just make things messier. So, you need regular showers and shampooing for clean and healthy hair and scalp during summers.

However, there should be a balance between washes and you must make sure you hair or scalp isn’t left dry or damaged. You can switch to a mild shampoo or herbal hair wash powder designed for summers. Hair wash powders also have cooling ingredients and can be tweaked to suit you better.

Now is the right time to pull up your hair and try braiding or pulled up pony tail styles, or even go with stylish buns. This keeps your neck free and reduces perspiration and makes way for drying.

Adding Henna or other cooling ingredients like Aloe Vera or Hibiscus to your hair oil is a good idea.
