DIY Hair Straightening with Rice

Many of us love straight hair but don’t want to go the chemical / heating route to achieve the look.

The good news, you don’t have to. Unless you are looking for celebrity quality straightening, you can pretty much do it at home. Again, this is not a foolproof or salon quality result method. But it definitely tames curls, frizz and gives you lustrous locks – yes, your hair isn’t damaged with this method 😉

We’ve already seen how to straighten hair at home with fenugreek, but this is another method and works better! This is another method where we use edible ingredients and though it is a tad difficult compared to the last recipe, this one works better – so worth the extra efforts I would say.

Now, let’s get to it shall we?

Ingredients

Cooked Rice – ½ Cup
Arrowroot Powder – ½ Cup
Shredded Coconut – ½ Cup
Lemon Juice – ½ Lemon

Instructions

Add some water to Arrowroot Powder and mix well without any lumps. Set aside.

Add the shredded coconut or coconut pieces to your mixer and get coconut milk – thick milk and thin milk. Set aside. But just add enough water and get the milk, so the quantity isn’t too much, but don’t waste any coconut milk.

Cooked rice – you can cook it in cooker, steamer, rice cooker or even directly. If you cook directly, also keep the strained water handy.

Grind the rice to a fine paste with the drained water or plain water. If you have remaining rice water – use it as your final rinse.

Now, in a thick-bottomed vessel – preferably Hindalium (this doesn’t burn easily), add the runny arrowroot mixture and heat on low flame.

When it is thick, add the ground rice paste and let it cook for a minute or two.

Now, add the coconut milk and let it cook till the consistency resembles that of a cream. Takes a couple of minutes.

Finally, add Lemon Juice and remove from heat after a minute.

Done!

Quick Tip – the lumps can form when cooking even if you mix arrowroot powder well before adding it to your pan. If you are not able to fully mash the lumps while cooking, run the paste in your blender for a few seconds and it will be soft and smooth 😉

How to Use the Paste?

Let the paste cool down fully.

In the interim, detangle your hair and comb through to ensure they’re fully loose and ready.

Now, apply the paste from the root to tips – as close to the scalp as you can go. I like doing this with my fingers than brush – preference varies. However, I must add this can’t be done by oneself that easily, you will need your loved one’s help ☺

Wait for about 30 minutes.

Wash off with a mild shampoo or herbal hair wash powder.

Done!

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

You can reduce or increase the quantities in the same proportion – equal quantities of coconut, arrowroot powder and rice with a dash of Lemon Juice – according to your hair length. This is suitable for mid-length.

I had good results with Corn Flour too, so you can use that instead of Arrowroot Powder.

Lemon Juice – is optional. It adds a nice sheen to your hair and good for hair.
