Hair Styling Clay is one of the more popular styling products, for those who want their locks relaxed and easy. Let’s take a look at more about this styling product and how you can prepare your own stash if you’d like to give it a shot, shall we?

Styling Clays are ideal when you have thick hair that’s hard to tame or style. These clays come with a smooth texture, making it easy to work it through layers of hair and get a matte finish with manageable locks. The best part – it doesn’t weigh down your hair, offers medium – high hold and does wonders for your hair.

In your double boiler, melt the Shea Butter and Coconut Oil.

When they’re melted, remove from heat.

When fully combined, transfer to a sterilized jar and lave it open till it cools down fully!

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

This recipe offers medium hold, though you can add a little Beeswax for better hold.

If you’re in tropical areas, this tends to look runny. In that case, use more of Shea Butter or add some Beeswax to get the right texture.

You can skip the Essential Oils, or swap them for whatever your favorites are. I made this as a gift for my husband, so the manly choices of fragrance 😉

Clay – You can use White Clay, Rhassoul Clay, Moroccan Red Clay, Black Clay, etc. Whatever suits you better, whatever is available close to you, works good. Some say the clay chosen should be closer to your hair color – like for example Black Clay for dark hair, White Clay for lighter hair, etc. But I’ve heard many say it doesn’t matter much. So, you could see what works for you. Personally, I used a combination of Black and Red Clay, to get dark brown – black shade.

The ratio listed is what worked for me, though it can vary depending on the quality of ingredients (type of oil or butter or wax) used and other factors. So, go with what works for you best.

How to Use The Clay?

Basically, you use this just you would use a styling gel or clay. Take a small dollop and work through your tresses spreading it along evenly. Once done, style it and you’re ready to rock and roll.

Shelf Life

I noticed smaller batches tend to work better, as the quality seems to go down after 2 – 3 weeks. Though it doesn’t get spoilt, I noticed a change in the hold and texture – looked more runny or loose.
